Small Loan, Big Impact: How Microfinance Transformed Mrs. Mwangi’s Business

At Enabling Qapital, we're committed to monitoring the progress of microfinance institutions and celebrating the success stories of entrepreneurs they support. Witnessing the improvement in the well-being of micro-entrepreneurs is integral to the impact we strive to achieve. Recently, we had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Nelson Mwangi, owner of a thriving small shop in Kangemi, Nairobi County, through our collaboration with Sidian Bank.

Sidian Bank Limited has been in operation for 39 years, with its inception as a project that supported the development of SME, Corporate and Micro customers and has grown to offer transformational financial solutions.

Mrs. Mwangi's journey from humble beginnings in 2000 to building a flourishing enterprise showcases the transformative power of entrepreneurship. At present, her shop employs a team of three and generates an impressive daily revenue ranging between 500 to 700 USD. Mrs. Mwangi's shop is a one-stop destination for a diverse array of products, including wholesale and retail items, as well as LPG gas cylinders. From essential household staples like flour, eggs, and cooking oil to beauty products and stationery, her shop caters to the varied needs of her loyal clientele. However, it's the selling and refilling of LPG gas cylinders that serves as the primary revenue stream for Mrs. Mwangi's business.

On a successful day, she can refill a total of eight 6kg cylinders and ten 13kg and 15kg cylinders, catering to the diverse needs of her customers. By sourcing her gas directly from the manufacturers, Mrs. Mwangi can offer competitive prices, setting her apart from other gas sellers in the area. This strategic advantage not only ensures customer satisfaction but also contributes to the steady growth of her business.

Enabling Qapital promotes and supports the growth of the clean cooking value chain in Sub-Saharan Africa through various product offerings. One avenue through which we promote this is by investing in Biofuel/LPG fuel and stove distributors.

Through her thriving business endeavors, Mrs. Mwangi has emerged as a pivotal provider for her family, playing a crucial role in securing their financial stability. Her business not only supports her children's education and ensures their welfare but also meets the essential household needs, thereby fostering a comfortable and fulfilling life for her loved ones.
